About Koi Empire — South Africa’s Biggest Koi Farm

Established 1998: 4th Generation Koi Keepers

Koi Empire has been South Africa’s leading koi farm since 1998, growing into the biggest koi farm in South Africa, with over 70 ponds and dams. We are 4th generation koi keepers, meaning decades of hands-on knowledge and family expertise run through everything we do — from breeding and importing to pond care and koi health.

Why We Import Koi from Japan and Taiwan

Our koi are imported directly from Japan and Taiwan because of one thing above all: genetics.

Japanese and Taiwanese koi are genetically superior to domestically bred koi. They grow larger, live longer, and carry stronger bloodlines developed over generations of selective breeding. Breeders in Japan and Taiwan take great care to protect and enhance their gene pool, producing koi with better size, colour development, and lifespan.

In contrast, many Western breeders have tried to match the size of Japanese koi by forcing faster growth — but this often comes at the cost of a shorter lifespan. At Koi Empire, we don’t cut corners. We import authentic, genetically superior koi so our customers get fish that grow bigger, live longer, and stay healthier.

Qualikoi Food: ISO-Certified Quality You Can Trust

We import Qualikoi Food, an ISO-certified koi food rich in essential minerals, protein, and nutrition. Because of its quality, koi waste produced from Qualikoi is far cleaner than most other reputable brands on the market — meaning less pollution in your pond and easier water maintenance.

Why Quality Koi Food Matters

Koi are omnivores. In the wild, they naturally eat algae, insects, plant matter, and other organic material. In a pond, they depend entirely on what you feed them.

Cheap koi food is often loaded with fillers and low-grade ingredients that have lost most of their nutritional value. Because it’s poorly digested, most of it passes straight through the koi and pollutes your pond water instead of nourishing your fish. Feeding your koi high-quality food isn’t optional — it directly affects their health, colour, growth, and your water quality.

Biological Filtration vs. Sand Filters

At Koi Empire, we strongly advocate for biological filter systems over the sand filters that have become common in South Africa.

The problem with sand filters:
Sand filters are popular because many swimming pool technicians market themselves as koi pond “experts” and install high-density sand or filter media. But sand filters are difficult to maintain — they need backwashing every 2 to 3 days, turning koi keeping into a constant chore. This is one of the biggest reasons people lose interest in the hobby. Worse, if the filter isn’t cleaned regularly, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate build up rapidly, putting your koi at serious risk of sickness or death.

Why a biological filter is the better choice:
A biological pond filter mimics nature’s own water-cleaning process. Beneficial bacteria colonize different layers of the filter system (housed outside the pond) and break down toxins produced by fish waste. Clean water then flows back into the pond in a continuous, low-maintenance cycle — no daily backwashing, no koi slavery.

Is a Biological Filter Really Necessary?

Yes — and here’s why it matters for your koi’s health:

  • Ammonia is naturally produced by fish waste and decaying matter, and it can make koi seriously ill.
  • Nitrite is toxic to koi and other pond fish, compromising their ability to absorb oxygen.
  • Nitrate promotes algae growth — which is why so many ponds struggle with string algae or blanket weed, even with a UV clarifier installed.

Even the best UV light can’t fix a water clarity problem caused by poor bacteria balance. That’s why, at Koi Empire, we always emphasize the importance of establishing and maintaining good bacteria in your pond. Controlling nitrate levels isn’t just recommended — it’s essential for a healthy, thriving koi pond.
